CONVERSATIONS WITH JOHN FITCH
DREAMS, LIFE, AND RACING.
A NOTE TO RESEARCHERS AND SCHOLARS: FAIR USE
The value of these recordings is that the late John Fitch is here, and in his own words. The goal of this site is to make available indefinitely to racing authors and scholars the recollections of an important person in the Gentleman Era of post-war racing - John Fitch - for use in their own work.
It was John Fitch’s desire that I would one day make these interviews available. The format of streaming files allows the proper context in that they are unedited. Now, on the fifteenth anniversary of the sessions, I have released them. The goal of this special project is formed with the intent of having him back, even for one day…which is what it takes to view these thirty segments. With these recordings, it will be possible know what he experienced, how he spoke, what he thought, his mannerisms, his intelligence, and sense of humor. Wherever possible, we’ve included the informalities that occur in recording such as our own camera adjustments, or his lighting up a tobacco pipe. Editing occurs only between breaks in the tape media. With these recordings, we hope that we’ve asked some essential questions, and perhaps more. Out of this, feel free to quote John Fitch, the Gentleman Racer. His words here are a record.
